As I approach a half of a century on the planet, I am beginning to understand that our greatest reward is realized through the service of others. The feeling you get when you give of yourself and have an impact in the life of another is priceless. There are countless ways to do it. It is said that people applaud your success so long as you are not more successful than them. This was not the case for My Aunt Ruth and Uncle Don. They were extraordinary people. They didn’t have a lot of money, but truly appreciated life. When I was having my house built, they came to visit. When they walked into the room that was to become my home theatre, they looked at each other and smiled. They were so proud of me. There was never any judgment or envy; They were just genuinely happy for me. The fact that I was their nephew and they loved me was certainly a factor, but they never judged anyone or felt insecure about anything.…
Ever notice how the wealthiest people tend to be the most generous? If you look at a list of top philanthropists you see names like Bill Gates and Warren Buffet. You could make the argument that they can afford to be generous. I would suggest that if you knew them before they accumulated their wealth, they were already generous people. I am convinced that this fact had a lot to do with why they became wealthy in the first place. It comes down to the law of reciprocity—what you give away comes back to you with dividends.
