How Can You Take Control of Your Life | Joel Brookman
In order to take control of your life you must first accept what is. You begin by playing the hand you are dealt. It is important to realize that your past doesn’t control your life unless you allow it to. Will you stay mired in the past or look to build your future the way you would like it to be? This is a choice you need to make.
Assume as a child, your father whipped you with his belt, and repeatedly told you that you would amount to nothing in life. Would this affect your ability to succeed later in life?
We all have a story. Many of us have allowed our story to hold us back. The first realization is that you are not your story. The second is that you have the ability to accomplish virtually anything you set your mind to, as long as you believe that you can.
Consider Jim Abbot. Jim was born without a right hand. He had every right to make this his story, but refused. Instead he challenged himself to come up with a way to use a baseball glove on the stump of his right arm. Not only did he make it into the major league as a pitcher, he played for 10 seasons. In 1993 he actually pitched a no hitter.
Jim made a choice. He could have chosen to be the disabled individual who allowed his “story” to limit his dreams. Instead he chose to pursue those dreams.
Do you keep living your story or do you create a new one? It’s time for you to take control of your life. It begins with moving beyond your limiting beliefs. Refuse to let your past dictate who you are today. Decide who you want to be from this day forward. Know that you can and will move your life in the direction you choose. It’s time for you to take control of your life.
