I am writing this at the tail end my family’s Spring Break. It began with a trip to Washington, D.C. where my we were extremely fortunate to get a tour of the West Wing of the White House. We also got a private tour of the Capital building where we were able to spend time on the floor of the House and Senate. Finally we were taken to the Naval Observatory for a fascinating view of the Master Clock where the official time is kept for the entire world. After leaving Washington we flew out to Beaver Creek, Colorado just in time for a foot of fresh powder on the mountain.…

One of my childhood heroes took his own life last week. His name was Keith Emerson, from Emerson Lake and Palmer. He was one best keyboard players in the world. At age 71, he apparently had nerve damage in his hands and he could no longer perform at the same level.
We all know that former athlete that still relives the past glory days at every opportunity. It’s always interesting to see how people define themselves. Growing up I remember defining myself through the people I hung out with. When I started weight training I defined myself by my physicality. If you rated your life on a scale from a 1-10, what would it be? Now break down the various components and do the same: rate your family situation, relationship with your significant other if you have one, work, and leisure time.

As a child one of my favorite athletes was Julius Erving [“Dr. J”]. Aside from being one of the best basketball players of all time, he carried himself much differently than most other athletes. Those around him were always amazed at how kind and humble he was. He gave of himself through his work with countless charities. What drew me to him as a child was the class he had both on and off the court. Stop taking life so seriously. We are only here for a limited time, and none of us knows when our last day will be. What about the people you know whose life is cut short?
