Manage Stress

As daily life happens we often get consumed in the craziness. We go off in our head and start to contemplate the “what ifs.” Next we begin to worry about these mental constructs playing out. Why do we torment ourselves? Wouldn’t it be better if we could assert some control over our thoughts? This would enable us to get grounded and better manage stress.

To make things worse, most of what we worry about never happens. The vast majority of stress is a result of worrying about the future. The body’s response to stress is meant to be short lived. If a bear is coming after you, your hypothalamus instructs your adrenal glands to release adrenaline and cortisol.…

Integrity

debate

As I watch the political environment unfold in the U.S. I am amazed by how poorly candidates treat each other. At some point it became acceptable to not just talk about your own credentials, but to tear down your opponent at any cost. I recently saw a commercial where a candidate, an injured war hero, ran a heartfelt message. This wonderful message quickly shifted to a vicious attack on his opponent. All the goodwill he built up was immediately lost when he criticized his rival. Why can’t candidates take the high road? If people I do business with treated their competitors the way candidates treat each other, I’d take my business elsewhere.…

When you have a difficult decision, these are your “go to” people. We’re talking about your doctor, lawyer, accountant, and financial advisor. If you own property you may also consider your plumber, electrician, and carpenter part of this group.…

Priorities

hurricane

There’s nothing like a category 4 hurricane on a direct path to your house to help you assess your priorities. This was an interesting week. It looked as if we were going to take a direct hit from a 140 mile per hour storm. Living in southeast Florida on the Atlantic Ocean, across the street from the intracoastal waterway, is about the worst possible place to be for such an event.

One of the benefits of hurricanes over other natural disasters (like earthquakes or tornados) is the opportunity to evacuate. We typically have a 48-hour window where we have an idea of the severity and trajectory of the storm.…

Stop Comparing Yourself to Others

As we scan Facebook we see the best part of the lives of those we’ve “friended”. We view their vacations, their new homes, their children’s accomplishments, and their biggest life events. This is the highlight reel of their lives. Nobody puts the bad things on Facebook–When their 17 year old comes home drunk, the husband is caught having an affair or their spouse losses her job. As we look at the lives of others we often compare that to our own situation and we may look on with envy. The question really should be, what are you not seeing? The message: Stop comparing yourself to others.…
