Bliss

Bliss can be defined as pure happiness. Bliss represents the ideal state for humans. Many of us spend our time and energy thinking of what we want in life: cars, houses, relationships, vacations. While it’s wonderful to strive for these things, they are all external. True bliss can only be found internally. The question becomes, how do you achieve a state of bliss as often as possible?

Discover what brings purpose to your life. When you spend your days doing what you love, and feel that you are making a difference, you have found your purpose. When you live with a sense of purpose and take the time to appreciate the ride, you can’t help but experience bliss.

Be in service to others. Nothing is more rewarding than doing for others. Bliss is the feeling you get when you experience the emotion of making an impact in the life of another.

Be cognizant of where you focus your energy. If all you do is watch violent TV shows and local news, you’ll probably have a tougher time finding bliss in your life. Plugging into positive stimuli helps to enhance your mindset and allows you to appreciate your surroundings. As you do, you open yourself up to experience greater bliss.

Meditation is the most effective way to reach a state of bliss. Since bliss comes internally we need a way to go inside. Meditation is the tool to get you there. Think of meditation as an exercise to clear your mind by unplugging from your ego-driven thoughts. While there are many ways to achieve a meditative state, the simplest is just to sit quietly, focus on your breath, and become the observer of the thoughts that come into your mind. As the thoughts come in, notice them, then put your focus back on your breath and allow the thoughts to dissipate. As you remove yourself from the noise that is your ego driven thoughts, you reach a blissful state. Keep in mind meditation is an exercise for your mind, and like any exercise, the more you do it, the more proficient you become.

Once you understand that bliss is your ideal state, the question becomes how do you get there more frequently? Realize that you have the ability to direct your thoughts. Tune into that which brings you a sense of purpose. Surround yourself with positive stimuli, and take time each day to unplug from your ego. As you do these things you experience greater inner peace. Inner peace equates to happiness.
