Resonate With Your Environment

Last week we talked about the concept of riding the wave as a metaphor for how to live a fulfilling life. The point I made is that you first have to get present in the moment and accept what is. Once you are in the moment it is important to tune into your environment. Think of your environment as the current in the ocean. You can navigate in the direction you would like to go but you must do so within the framework of the current. As I mentioned earlier, fighting it or wishing it away doesn’t change what is, and does nothing but render you powerless to improve your situation. The bottom line is that you must resonate with your environment. The question is, how do you do that?

Is there an activity that you find peaceful?  One where time passes but you are so focused on the moment that you barely realize it. It could be running, gardening, playing golf, or cooking. This type of full engagement is an example of riding the wave and resonating with your environment .

How often are you doing it? Can you do it every day? If it is an activity like golf that most of us cannot do each day, is there something you can do daily to reach the same mental state? If you can’t come up with a daily activity, consider sitting in silence for 20 minutes and focusing on your breath.

Last week we discussed the concept of taking inventory of your life. Are you where you want to be in your career, in your family life, socially, and spiritually? Before you begin the activity that focuses you in the moment, think about what you would like your life situation to be. See yourself in that place. Fantasize about what it would feel like to be there. Know you will attain this or something even better.

For homework this week, try to resonate with your environment. Think about what action you would need to take to move you toward that desired situation. Put a plan in place to ensure it happens and begin to take the incremental steps toward getting you there each day.
