Disconnect

This week I am with my family skiing in Colorado. I feel like we have grown closer through the quality time we are spending together. Many of us have an opportunity to take time away from work during the holidays. The question is, can you disconnect from work and focus on other aspects of your life?

I’ll make this week’s blog short and to the point. We all need balance in life. Disconnecting allows you to break up your daily routine. It not only makes life more exciting but allows an opportunity for self-reflection. It also provides health benefits. According to Web MD, taking vacations lowers your risk of heart disease, allows for a better outlook on life, and helps provide more motivation to reach your goals. A New York Times article suggests, “Human beings aren’t designed to expend energy continuously, rather, we’re meant to pulse between spending and recovering energy.”

If you are taking time away and still thinking about work, you are not allowing yourself to disconnect and are not getting the mental recharge you need. Stop reading emails, stop getting in your head about work related issues, and use your time away to be present in the moment with family and friends. In the end, not only will your family appreciate you more, you will come back to work rejuvenated with a fresh perspective. This is the perfect recipe for increasing productivity.
