You Can Control Your Energy

You know that feeling when you walk into a room and know immediately, without anyone saying anything to you, that the people around you are angry or stressed? You can feel the tension all around you even though you had no introduction to the reason why.  That is because we constantly release energy.  Our thoughts constitute energy.  While we may realize that we give off energy all day long, few make the connection that once recognized, we can refocus and alter it. You can control your energy.

When you walk into a conference room, fully prepared to discuss your well thought-out ideas, your energy radiates confidence and enthusiasm.  When you sit down to address an issue that has been festering between you and your spouse, you may radiate anxiety, or even contempt.  Before even speaking one word, the people around you can sense your mood, your energy.  That is also why when someone close to you is angry, upset, or anxious, your mood seems to quickly reflect theirs.  We work off each other’s energy. Unconsciously, the people around you take on that energy.

So how do you avoid bringing tension home from work?  How do you manage an emotional child or loved one? First, simply breathe. Recognize that this is merely energy.  You hold the ability to alter your own energy. If you continue to radiate anger, the energy in the room expands anger.  If instead, you choose emit calmness, the energy shifts.

Watch parents in a situation when a child falls down while playing.  One parent may immediately jump up, run to the child, and in a frantic voice, question if he’s hurt. Another parent may calmly get up, walk over, kneel down, look the child in the eye, and affirm that everything is okay. Assuming the identical ailment, which child resumes playing more quickly?  It is the human energy reacting to the situation that changes its course.

As you approach your next meeting, take a moment beforehand to breathe and focus your mental state on calmness and confidence. You should feel your energy shift to match those thoughts. Once aligned, watch how the people around you react. The energy you bring will direct the flow of the meeting. Just remember you can control your energy.
